Surgical solutions: Implant soft-tissue deficiencies

The perils of do-it-yourself dentistry:
A case study

Under the guise of affordable access to dental care, the general public is being duped into thinking do-it-yourself (DIY) dentistry for half price is safe, from whitening treatments at shopping malls to—more recently—orthodontic treatment over the internet. Especially disconcerting is the growing acceptance of patients treating their own dental needs. Reducing dentistry into simple mechanical treatment without biological, evidence-based rationale is a slippery slope with many medicolegal questions.

Dr. Zack Faber and I present the case of a 22-year-old who attempted gap banding—the popular DIY method of using rubber bands to close diastemas. This patient vowed never again to perform dentistry on herself. After you educate your patients about the dangerous outcomes of DIY dentistry, they will understand why too.
