U.S. Senate panel boosts DOE hydro research support to US60 million
WASHINGTON -- The Senate Appropriations Committee has doubled a proposal of the House Appropriations Committee, endorsing US60 million for the Department of Energy’s hydropower research and development program, with a note to expand marine and hydrokinetic R and D.

FPL Energy experienced multiple failures of the thrust bearing in the single turbine-generating unit at its 6-MW Cataract plant in Maine. To solve the problem, FPL Energy installed a new eight-pad, spring-supported PTFE thrust bearing and a new thrust block.

Barnard begins work to increase height of California’s San Vicente Dam
SAN DIEGO, Calif., U.S. -- Barnard Construction Co. began preliminary foundation work for a project to add 117 feet to the 220-foot-tall San Vicente Dam in Southern California, the world’s largest dam heightening project using roller-compacted concrete.
