One of the biggest announcements coming out of West Africa recently involves Chevron, through Cabinda Gulf Oil Co. Ltd., starting oil production from the deepwater Lobito field off Angola.

An interesting note to the project is that Chevron International's president, John Watson, said the project "was completed ahead of schedule, on budget, and -- most importantly -- in a safe manner."

That is no small feat for such a large project. The development is 50 mi offshore in 1,300 ft of water and involved subsea centers tied back to an existing drilling and production platform.

Furthermore, the pieces came from all over the globe. Some were from Argentina, some Europe, some the US, and some from the host country Angola.

Bringing all that together early and on budget deserves recognition, and likely made for some happy partners, too.
