:: News from SMT
:: January 10, 2007

Just this morning I began preparing for the VISION awards presentations at IPC Printed Circuits Expo/APEX/Designers Summit on February 19th at 6 9 p.m., Wilshire Grand in Los Angeles. It will be a simply wonderful event recognizing inventors over time from Sir John Ambrose Fleming who invented the diode for Marconi Co. to Intel which introduced the Pentium in 1993.
My list probably is more SMT-specific than most; it includes dates for the first SMTA, formed in San Jose with Norb Sokolowski of Alpha Metals as president, in 1984, the formation of the SIA in 1977, and founding of the IPC in 1957, right along with other significant events. Perhaps to us at SMT Magazine the date we were first formed, 1986, is extremely important. It recognizes that our industry made commercialization possible for PCs, cellular phones, LCD televisions, GPS, and so many other cost-efficient, reliable electronics products. Take a bow! You who are involved in this industry deserve recognition.
For those receiving an award this year, congratulations. For all who submitted an application, congratulations. For those who were involved in any significant improvement in the SMT process, congratulations.
Please consider this an invitation to come to our VISION awards ceremony at APEX. Have some drinks and food with friends in the industry, dance to the music, receive the recognition you deserve. Know that you are important, especially to us.
Cheers, Gail Flower, editor-in-chief

ERP and PLM: Addressing Differing Manufacturing Needs

There is some confusion in the industry as to what role enterprise resource planning (ERP) and product life-cycle management (PLM) systems play in a company's business process. Clarification of the key features of ERP and PLM, where they fit in the product development and manufacturing process, and how integrating these environments can deliver positive results is important for manufacturers to understand why each is critical to success. A clarification of these systems also will help manufacturers maximize the functionality of each system, and gain the most from their investment.
